IT Certification Landscape 2016 & 2019

10 . 24 . 2019 _ 10am - 6pmLooking at Global Knowledge’s Top-Paying Certifications in 2016 you see there is a increased interest in security certifications, I think regardless of the route you take in IT, Security is one of those certifications that will be of interest and will only continue to gain importance in the years to come, aside from that AWS (Cloud) is seen to take the pole position with Cisco Certifications dominating the top 15 with 4/15 in the list:-

  1. AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate – $125,871
  2. Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC)- $122,954
  3. Certified Information Security Manager (CISM)- $122,291
  4. Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)- $121,923
  5. Project Management Professional (PMP®)- $116,094
  6. Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA)- $113,320
  7. Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) Routing and Switching- $112,858
  8. Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Data Center- $107,045
  9. Cisco Certified Design Professional (CCDP)- $105,008
  10. Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH)- $103,297
  11. Six Sigma Green Belt- $102,594
  12. Citrix Certified Professional – Virtualization (CCP-V)- $102,138
  13. Cisco Certified Networking Professional (CCNP) Security- $101,414
  14. ITIL® v3 Foundation- $99,869
  15. VMware Certified Professional 5 – Data Center Virtualization (VCP5-DCV)- $99,334

Fast forward to comparing the same in 2019, what’s interesting is that there a number of new certifications making a mark, Cisco just manages to hang on at 15, AWS is no longer the lead certification, being overtaken by Google Cloud but remains at the top 5 and also gains another related AWS Developer associate at the same time,

As cloud & virtualization (more cloud) continue to gain prominence you see that security for the most part retains overall dominance.. Something else for consideration is that with Cloud,  the ability to execute go hand in hand as such looking at certifications and as such PMP and ScrumMaster seem like a good options (but any kind of PM certifications in my opinion would suffice if you had a combination of other top certs) and if I had was a betting person I would say Security would still be safe but CISM seems to be the least risky option…

  1. Google Certified Professional Cloud Architect – $139,529 (+New)
  2. PMP® – Project Management Professional – $135,798 (+4)
  3. Certified ScrumMaster® – $135,441 (+New)
  4. AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate – $132,840(-3)
  5. AWS Certified Developer – Associate – $130,369 (+New)
  6. Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE): Server Infrastructure – $121,288 (+New)
  7. ITIL® Foundation – $120,566 (+7)
  8. CISM – Certified Information Security Manager – $118,412 (-5)
  9. CRISC – Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control – $117,395  (-7)
  10. CISSP – Certified Information Systems Security Professional – $116,900 (-6)
  11. CEH – Certified Ethical Hacker – $116,306 (-1)
  12. Citrix Certified Associate – Virtualization (CCA-V) – $113,442 (+0)
  13. CompTIA Security+ – $110,321 (+New)
  14. CompTIA Network+ – $107,143 (+New)
  15. Cisco Certified Networking Professional (CCNP) Routing and Switching – $106,957 (-8)

Final Thoughts

Im not sure what value  you can actually give to the salary as this would differ based on location and demand  – the same holds true for certifications, i cant imagine a CCNP holds more value in 2019 whereas the CCIE Routing and Switching completely drops off the list so i would take the overall results with a pinch of salt but nevertheless worthwhile to see from a training company’s perspective and give us a insight as to the overall market trends.
